The Long Game

The Long Game

The past few weeks have been an exciting and confusing mess. I've been presented with life-changing opportunities and sobering realities of being a 41-year-old father of two. After gnawing on what could be and what has been, I breathed a sigh of relief to wallow (at least temporarily) in what IS.

This song is a story of someone finally understanding that this is the time to give, to provide, to love and invest as much as he can in the now. (And maybe it's about being a grownup who wants to ditch the trappings of grownup-ness but also be able to afford food and hot water and college for kids).

In that spirit I spent exactly 57 minutes writing this tune Saturday after a long work week, after early soccer and solid parenting, after supervising a new main water line and water heater fix, and before a perfect date and desperately needed laughter. I finished recording it after sleeping late, making breakfast, lunch with my mother and brother, after borrowing a truck, buying a toilet, cleaning the kitchen, after playing harmonica on this song with my JoJo and tucking both kids in bed.

When I crawl into bed tonight, it'll still feel like there was not enough time in the day to love and parent and visit and work and create like I think I should. Then I'll remember that it's all about the long game.
